Pho Broadway

I had to pick up my dad this past Saturday after he's been on vacation in Canada for 2 weeks to be with his brothers, sisters, mom, and all our other our relatives. I was anticipating to eat at Phoenix in Chinatown. Because, it's Phoenix and that's where we always go for late nights when it comes to my dad. When he got in my car, and I mentioned Phoenix, his reply was "If you want" (in Cantonese). That's a NO, I don't want that. This is something all girls will understand. I know well enough to go somewhere else.

Without much time spent, he immediately said pho, in Chinatown. It's kind of cute that your parents will always assume that you know nothing where certain places are. "you will make a left here" - "Another left here" - "And it will be on your right where the bank is". It's like.. dude, dad, we've eaten here so many times. But go ahead. I was hungry and my mind wasn't straight anyways. How did I even make it back to LA?

I was hungry. And all I had to keep me through the traffic was a little pouch of corn nuts. I wanted to order everything when I arrived. And since I was with my dad, I felt like it was okay to do so. After all, my dad has the same eating temperament as I do.

My dad, Peter.

Look how happy he is. My dad ordered the rare steak pho with the rare steak on the side. Not a lot of places do this anymore. I'm sure it has a lot to do with health regulations, but if you request it (at any Vietnamese restaurant) I'm sure they will do it for you. The rare steak was perfectly shaved, and extremely tender even if it was already in the soup (I had mine in the soup). My dad used to be a butcher over 15 years ago, so he knows how he wants his meat.

Egg Rolls (duh)

Funny thing about this was I was looking for the 2 pc order. You know, a lot of places has this option, but it wasn't on the menu. My dad immediately said 4 pc is fine. And I, of course, went with what dad said. I love egg rolls fried with rice paper over egg paper. Both is good, but I love the slight chewiness rice paper leaves as it is crunchy on the outside.

My pho. I like to throw in jalapenos, bean sprouts, all the herbs, a lot of lime, and a squirt of sriracha. For my dipping sauce, I like to have sriracha, the hoisin, and the pickled Serrano.

I also couldn't help myself and ordered the 3 colored ice drink. It's basically sweet red bean, mung bean, green jelly, and sweet coconut milk slush on top. Mix together and slurps up!

This is something I grew up drinking as a kid. For some reason, I feel as we get older, we tend to stop consuming things that were common with our meals. I would remember, I would order this every time we have Vietnamese food. And now, I noticed I only drink water with my meals. That or alcohol, but that's a whole different meal we are talking about. I'm sure you get it. Sugar is bad for you. But a little is okay. The 3 color drink here was very mild. I do wished it was sweeter, just because I haven't had this in a long time. Now that I have, I'm scared that this will be the new trend again every time I have Vietnamese food.

After this, I took my dad home and helped him with his luggage. He gaved me some sweet pastries, which I will share with you later. In the mean time, check out Pho Broadway in Chinatown, Los Angeles. They've been here for decades, accepts credit cards and isn't too packed to accommodate if you need to fuel up before having a few drinks. Just saying.

Bun Rieu

Hi Guys! It's been a while, but I am back after a busy week. If you follow my Instagram: daiisies_eat, you will see a post I made of Bun Rieu.

My mom called me on my way home from work to let me know she made some Vietnamese noodle soup for me to take home. I didn't know what to expect, but I knew I was going to enjoy it. I think when it comes to flavor, I get that from my mom. But when it comes to creativity, I get that from my dad. Because everything my mom makes, I love. My dad? I'm not sure I know where to start... but he definitely gets an A for reaching out of the box... (sorry pops!).

Upon arrival to my moms, I noticed she was lugging out this huge bag. I wasn't sure what was inside besides "Vietnamese Noodles". I kept thinking it was Pho, because... heck we are Chinese, since when did my mom know how to make anything Vietnamese?

After parking my car, I did the usual with grabbing my phone, keys, bag, lunch pale, and then the dinner my mom made. It was HEAVIER than I expected. If my neighbors didn't know who I was, they would've probably assumed I stole something with my expression.

Mystery Pot

Well, you guys already know what's inside since the post reads Bun Rieu and it was also mentioned in the beginning of this post. But, DENG just look at this. She was not kidding about dinner. It was literally Bun Rieu for days. She was smart to put newspaper underneath, because it was spilling the way that I was driving.

What's inside?! Ford wonders too.

Vermicelli noodles? Definitely not pho. My buddy boy there was intrigued with the smell too. On top of the loaded Vermicelli noodles were different herbs: mint (different kinds), Coriander, basil, and leafy romaine.

Bun RIEU!

My heart exploded. Bun Rieu is a tomato based soup with crab, ground pork and shrimp, and some eggs mixed in throughout the soup. For this soup, my mom added pork feet and pork bone.

Put these babies together and you get:

The pork meat balls were mixed with shrimp. The soup had a strong crab shell flavor (Amazing). The pork feet has a nice gelatinous texture that I love. No it is not disgusting. I grew up eating this and probably had some when I was in my mums belly. I slurred in some thai spicy chili garlic paste to excel the flavors. It was a super hot day from what I remember. If I closed my eyes, I could swear I was in Asia. With the sweat dripping down my brows, the bubbles of sweat coming out of my back saying hello... and the awesome sweat stash that is haunting me for days.

Oh crap I just remembered that my mom made me wontons as well! I will update this with the recipe once my mom decides to teach me.

Now... go call your mom, and tell her you love her.. so she will make you some dinner.

Happy slurping.

Noodle City

All you humans ever known to Noodle Planet and think that's the best that you can do, have you ever tried Noodle City? It's one of my favorite joints that my parents used to take us to. Sometimes, they would even bring home take-out and I would remember finding the largest bowl I can get my hands on to mix my noodles together. These are moments you kind of forget and take for granted. Lately, I've been really thinking and appreciating all the delicious memories that I've received growing up. My parents literally fed us every type of cuisine you can think of. From having sushi at Todai Buffet (really? don't judge), every fast food joint, chili cheese fries, street tacos, chicharron from Super A, the best fried chicken from Pioneers followed by Popeyes, and you everything else you can just imagine.

Noodle City is located right next to Noodle Planet on Valley BLVD in Alhambra.

 628 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91803

The set up is not the greatest with the interior being a bit outdated. You kind of have this impression that maybe you should step out and go to Noodle World. Noodle City is strictly Vietnamese food. No weird fusions or other cuisines like Thai/Chinese/Japanese muddled into a menu.

The menu itself, is simple yet complicated. Complicated in a good way of course. You can literally find every combination you would like. Broken rice with pork chop. Broken rice with egg rolls pork chop and steamed egg. Broken rice with shredded pork skin and steamed egg. You get the point. There was a lot of things I wanted. But when I saw Lemongrass beef on the menu, I literally salivated. I was imagining taking every bite, with a citrus burst of flavor, with the fresh cut veggies and basil, and the fish sauce mix with a big glob of chili garlic/sambal to give it more heat.

Lemongrass Beef soupless noodle

What's not to get excited about? Everything that I just described prior to eating this, met the expectations and more. Everything just tasted super fresh. The lettuce, cucumbers and basil. The spicy sauce drizzled onto each bite. I'm salivating all over again as I am thinking back on this.

Combo pho

Combo pho

Combo phos normally has everything in it. Rare steak slices, brisket, tendon, tripe, beef balls. Douse this with bean sprouts, basil, fresh jalapeno, lime juice, culantro, and a whole lot of Sriracha. Oh and a lot of napkins to wipe your face.

If you ever have time or in the area and craving Vietnamese food, do give this place a try. I also believe credit/debits are acceptable with $10+. And the service can be slightly awkward... or to say it in a nice way, thug life. Don't be intimidated or feel mistreated. Just say your pleases and thank you's as you should in any other restaurant.

Slurps Up!
