Tacos Tu Madre

Hello,

Today I've gotten the opportunity to enjoy an amazing treat hosted by Damon Eats (@damoneats) for the soft opening of Tacos Tu Madre.

Tacos Tu Madre is a little shack with dia de los muertos art outside of the restaurant. Being a taco lover all my life, this was definitely a tasting I am excited about. I grew up eating street tacos such as: lengua, cabeza, buche, chicharron, Suadero, and tripas. So you can imagine my appreciation for the craft.

Tacos Tu Madre is a contemporary take on the classic tacos with a few spins on ingredients such as Duck Foie Gras.

Prices are still unknown at the moment, but you can see a large variety of tacos to test. Come with a group. Or someone who is really hungry that can eat. Like me. I always like to eat. So you can try a lot of them.

Course

Chorizo Eggs

This was one of our favorites, hence the first image. The chorizo had good flavor, and was not dry like a lot of chorizo I've had. The eggs were cooked perfectly over easy with a surprise ooey gooey center that became a finger licking madness. I was a bit intimidated by the size of the chorizo, but it was perfect with the eggs and handmade tortilla. I would definitely order this in a burrito.

Ahi Tuna

Another favorite. I'm a huge fan of a simple tartare. Simple, some dishes should be left that way and they did a great job at this one. The tuna was plump, was perfectly seasoned and not overly dressed with the sesame oil, ripened avocado, with a touch of furikake. I would love them to make a LARGE crunchy taco out of this. Just saying.

Fried

Fried Chicken and Fried Shrimp. I love fried anything. Especially in a taco. I have to say, their tortillas held up really well for all the dishes. The chicken had a tangy worcestershire/katsu sauce. The shrimp had a good fresh take with crema, salsa and pickled onions. Both were perfectly fried, and seasoned ever so slightly.

Delicious everything. Though, I did feel some tacos didn't need cheese. It masked the flavors of the marinade and seasonings of some dishes, but the cotija that they used was very tasty.

Drinks

Don't forget to tip the bartender. At food events with open bar, people think the bartenders are just there to pour you drinks. No. It's common courtesy to tip the bartender even if it's free.

All drinks were exciting and fun. And Yes. I think I drank all 3 in less than an hour. No I am not an alcoholic, I just like cocktails. The one with the lime is their El Diablo: Tequila based, Ginger Beer, and Creme De Casis. Vampire Punch is the one with pomegranates: Gin Based, Compari, Orange Juice and Soda. Death before Dinner is the Vader looking one: Rum Based, Grapefruit, maraschino, lime, and a few drops of charcoal.

Sweets

Horchata Slush

This was so freaking amazing. I can't even tell you how good this was. It was a perfect warm day in Los Angeles in the high 80's and this will definitely be something I will be driving out here for. You taste the creaminess and roasty flavors of the rice, with the perfect amount of sugar and cinnamon ratio. I'm so glad this was something I did not miss and definitely something I don't regret going in my belly.

Red Velvet Churros

We waited a long time for these because they ran out. But it's ok. When there's a wait, it gives you every right to drink. These churros are denser than what I'm used to, but their cinnamon sugar and cream cheese frosting were delicious.

And then, it all came out at once.

When churros fly out of the kitchen, you need a photo bomb huddle. What's not to love right?

It was a very fun afternoon spent with local foodies, eat a shit load of tacos, and have plenty of drinks. The turnout for this event was great. This shack is small and quaint, so make sure you don't bring a family/friends of 10 and expect to find seats. Opening tomorrow, November 1, I am appreciative that I was invited to this social media event. What better way to snap photos of food, but with a group of foodies who get it.

I took over 200 shots today. Pretty impressive.

Happy Birthday Donny Wu

Ok. Took some of the worst pictures this night for Donny's birthday. I haven't mastered shooting in dark light... and the amount of old fashioned I was drinking didn't help either. We had reservations at Arroyo Chophouse in Pasadena. The chophouse is one of the Yorbas and Donny's favorite places to celebrate a birthday. And when they do, they do it big.

Old Fashioned $16

We... had a lot of these. This was the Donny birthday drink. Every year for his birthday, most of everyone will have this as their drink of choice. It goes down so smooth which makes it a dangerous cocktail. Based with bourbon or rye, the orange twist and bitters makes me a happy girl. Don't forget to drink your water (oops).

Shrimp and King Crab platter. (Alaskan Crab $18, Jumbo shrimp cocktail $14)

First off, the shrimp was supposed to be cocktail shrimp, so this (BBQ Shrimp) had to be returned. When the dish came back, everyone were immediately digging in to one of the largest shrimps I've ever seen used for cocktail. And by the way, it was DELICIOUS. King Crab? DELICIOUS. Everything was extraordinary.

Raw oysters - Market Price

Yeah I don't remember what kind of oysters these were. Just call this post a failed post. BUT, we ordered 2 dozens of the small oysters that they have since they carried 2 that night. These oysters were spectacular! Cold, clean, buttery, had a nice snap with a sweet finish.

Foie Gras $20

We (as in Donny) ordered 4 of these. It was melting your buns good. Food gasmic in your mouth good. It actually made my mouth feel sexy if that makes sense. It doesn't huh? Well this was one of the best Foie Gras I've had. It's simple. They use a thick piece for every order. A literal explosion of flavor in your mouth, and one of my absolute favorite decadent things to order.

Wagyu New York $85

The Wagyu New York strip came in at 14oz. I was underwhelmed by how chewy it was.. With that being said, it did have good flavor, but it definitely didn't meet the expectations of a Wagyu Steak. American Wagyu or Japanese Wagyu, I've had both, and this was a bit disappointing.

On the other hand, I tried their Wagyu filet mignon, and that was much tastier coming in at $51.

Wagyu Rib Eye $88

Of course Donny ordered the Wagyu Rib Eye. The texture of the steak was also underwhelming. The fat in the steak however, was very flavorful. For the price, I would definitely order their regular rib eye...

Tomahawk Chop $110

This beast, made for a carnivore, came in at a womping 2 1/4 pounds. No knife, just gram the handle and chop it off like this was your last meal. Yes, 2 people can share it and maybe even 3. But you are about to die, so skip the onion ring and eat this up. I'm salivating all over again.

Of course, Donny ordered every single dish on the menu minus the Souffle. I say skip the dessert next time, and order yourself another Foie Gras. Just saying.

$1,666 and tip wasn't even included? Bold. We strolled to Old Town Pasadena. Crashed the Blind Donkey (btw yummy burgers), had more old fashioned, water, and played a few rounds of Shuffle Board. Followed the birthday boy to Kings Row Gastropub. And then, ended up in my first UBER ride to another place that I had no idea existed. From there, there were blue liquid shots. I lost track.

And guess what? I drove everyone home! I'm SO AWESOME!

And the next day?

Hungover as F!

Mother F'ers. Happy birthday Wu! till whoevers birthday is next. I will be hibernating.

Gyoza diet

If you are on a diet, you are going to die. I mean, there's a sign that tells you pretty much. DIE-t. Diet sounds like quit it. So we should all quit diets. Please. Someone. AGREE WITH ME! Why can't I eat chili cheese fries and drop 10 pounds at the same time? WHY? Why must life be so hard! Shutup all you skinny fast metabolism mother f'ers because one day you will get grubby. Or you will have babies with someone with fat genes. (this statement ONLY applies to people who giggles, and say 'I can eat whatever I want and not get fat ho-ho-he-he').

Ok... ok ok ok I'm sorry for being so vulgar. Let me take a step back.. But I'm sure, we've all been, tried, or still on some kind of diet. The diet doesn't necessarily mean weight lost. Some can just be a way of eating habits. Some can be... on a cookie diet. I love cookies... and fries.. and chicken.. fried... and I am DEFINITELY one of those people that goes to a steak house, and look for the largest oz of steak on the menu. I don't believe in 12-16oz steaks... 24oz+ and I'm in HEAVEN!

*sigh* I digress.

GYOZA TIME:

Recipe:

  1. ONE BAG OF FROZEN GYOZA.
  2. 4 tablespoons of Olive oil (or vegetable).
  3. 1/4 cup of water

I've been using a lot of canola oil after seeing Bobby Flay use a ton of it on his show "BBQ addict" shown of Food Network from 6:30AM-7:00AM pst. But, I realized that it had a strong flavor I wasn't too pleasant with. Normally, I can't really taste the difference between oils. But after using the Olive Oil from Costco for a LONG TIME (literally 2 large jugs for like, $24, a STEAL), I've grown to love the flavors it provided to my dishes. With that said, I could really taste the canola oil take over the dishes that I've made. So for this gyoza, I would honestly, use olive oil.

This is the intense part. No one is allowed to talk to you in this moment of solitude. The sound of the sizzle, the oil splatters, the sounds of your heartbeat as you are scared to your buns that oil is going to pop your eye out. Don't worry, that will all end. I poured the water into the pan maybe about 2 minutes of watching it sizzle on medium high. After the water drops, close the lid for about 5 minutes. Once the lid opens, the gyoza should look translucent. But the real test is when you flip them.

This is when I die. The crispy bottoms just makes me oh-so-happy. I tilt all of them to their side to get the slightest color on them before turning off the stove. During the process of waiting for the bottoms to color, I needed to add a little more water to make sure the dumpling was cooked throughout. But this really depends on your stove and how much your pan wants to work with you that day.

I ate this with a lot of Sriracha and some Broccoli sauteed in a lot of garlic.

So quick, so comforting, so happy.

Pop's Cafe - Hangover post #1

It was one of those mornings. One of those 'I know my body is not going to cooperate with me' type of days. It was a hot humid Sunday, and I felt like I was crawling in my own guilt. Dehydration.  My Jameson rendezvous from the night before. Those 2 thoughts just circled my head all day and I would think about how I am just going to stop, and never drink again. And then, I started thinking 'wow, I'm really hungry'. Like, really hungry. So hungry I drank some soup my dad made me that has been sitting in my fridge for a whole week.

After a short glimpse of what's in the hood, we ended up somewhere a little stretched away from the hood. Because the food looked like it was going to be bad for me. And my body needs more bad, to counter out the other bad that is making me upset. Yes that makes a lot of sense to me.

Pop's Country Breakfast: Sausage Biscuit and Sausage Gravy. Served with Irish potatoes and egg.

This was what brought me here. This is the ultimate hang over cure. A heart stopper that will put you out of your misery. A day like this, coffee is not your friend (even though I did have coffee). I've been to a few diners, and for some reason, they don't serve gravy with sausage in it. Why? WHY?

Sorry, when I happen to say a phrase that's in lyrics I know, I submerge myself in the moment.

Pop's do carry their biscuits and gravy in real sausage gravy. The consistency of the gravy was a little thick, but it was the perfect choice for my current state. John as you can see there, ordered the 2 stack with hashbrowns and 4 slices of bacon. No, he was not hungover.

Irish potatoes here, are hashbrowns with sauteed onions and green peppers on top. I chose a sunny side up egg because I want the rich yolk with the rich gravy. I'm telling you, I am going all in. But that's not the reason why I chose this dish.

sausage

A sausage patty between the biscuit. That's it. That's why I chose it. I wanted the sausage patty and thought it sounded ridiculously satisfying for my painfully twisted body with a throbbing head. I ate as much as I could before feeling a dark cloud closing in. Like my body was ready to go into a deep sleep.

That is when you know what the term Hangover Cure means. You need something that will take you down. Because trust me when I say sleep is what you need. I went home after this, and knocked out. Woke up in sweat thinking my hair was still wet from the shower this morning. I felt so freaking amazing! Well not 100%, but at least I'm not feeling like I'm rocking in a boat anymore.

The rest of the day consisted of watching more Homeland with John and doing laundry. There were a few intermissions where I would contemplate about how I survived. And how much I appreciated life. And how I love everyone and everything. The couch, my water, being able to watch Homeland, awaiting dinner, going to work the next day. My hangovers are pretty serious.

So to recap. Hydrate with water. Eat crappy, comforting food that puts you in a coma. Drink more water. Pee a lot. Take a nap. And be a couch potato.

What's your hangover cure? If it's drinking more, we definitely cannot be friends.

Ok first off, I wasn't drunk. Or I think I wasn't. I know I was fine because I remembered the whole night, just not how I got a bloody toe. It was dripping over the floors a little bit BUT I was fine. Neosporin and Bandages. See? I disinfected my toe first.

It was a Sunday. And to be honest, I would hate myself if I don't have one night out with some friends involving some kind of alcoholic beverage during labor day weekend.

... Going back to the story. I wanted to stay home, lay on the couch and watch countless hours of Homeland until it's not stressful anymore. But that sh*t is always stressful. My best friend Jocelynn called me and asked what I was doing.

'Laying on the couch' (I almost spelled coach).

'Do you feel lazy?'

'No, I'll call you when I leave'

And that was that. The commitment was done. She offered a way out. She asked if I was lazy and hell yea I was! But without a thought, I just put on a pair of jeans.. shirt, and sold my soul to her. I walked through the halls to say goodbye to John like it was a death penalty. John didn't want to go because he had too much work to catch up on. That normally means more trouble for me.

I'm not going to tell you how much I had to drink. All I can say is her boyfriend Mark, who has also became one of my close friends over the years, decided to make Margaritas. Poor guy was squeezing the limes with his hands and making simple syrup from scratch. Fun part of it was we get to drink it. It was either too sour or too sweet (sorry Mark), but one thing he did well was masking the flavors of the tequila. All I can tell you is that Jose Cuervo and I go way back. And we are not friends. We are enemies. But today, I won.

What I love about hanging out with these 2 is that everything is always a yes, sure, if you want, let's do it. I had steak for dinner, but had my heart set on something tonight. Mark said it first. Chili cheese fries.

Chili Cheese mess

We headed over to Troys drive in No 8 in Highland Park on York. Mark wanted more than one order, but I said no and that we should share. See that there? Self Control. Why should one person eat that whole thing? You'll probably die, but you'll be smiling.

I stopped at the drive thru, and contemplated on what we should get. Was I hungry? I thought about my dinner. Had Marks 750ml tequila. Had a few chips. But we are sharing the chili cheese fries right?

*Pulls up drive thru*

"One chili cheese fries with the fries well done, one bacon cheeseburger with avocado, one carne asada burrito and ONE PASTRAMI BURGER."

OK What just happened there? Who gives a sh*t it was only $20!

Yes that saved my ass and we ended up watching 2 more episodes of Homeland when I got home. If you are a guy or a girl, always bring food home if you are out. I get hangry as hell. Sitting around, waiting. Pretending like I am busy but I am not. I'm not hungry either but you better bring me back something to eat. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, there's something wrong with you. And I am saying it like "there's sumthin' wrooooong wid chu".

Pastrami was on point and met the expectations of a drive in burger joint. Nothing you would raise a pinky about. And if you are going to be critiquing a place like this, it goes back to the same phrase "there's sumthin' wrooooong wid chu".

This is the cure to prevent hangovers. and 10 pounds.

At the end of the night, I was extremely happy I hung out with them. For a few hours, I actually forgot about a lot of things. Time just stopped and the stresses that I had went away. You need friends like that in your life. Even more important, the ones that can make you feel like who you are. I can fart at that moment and be cool with it. And I probably did who knows. Since I don't even remember how I cut my toe. Yeah, that part was not cool.
